Cancers still resist to current therapies

Cancers in relation with blood production organs (leukemia, lymphomas…) still resist to current treatments in an unexplained way. Therefore, the Labex Toucan aims at finding innovating ways in the treatment of these diseases so relapses can be avoided. These innovations will need to improve cancer cells targeting but also to better understand their environment.

 Two research themes

  • The cell: the teams of the Labex Toucan will try to define the intrinsic characteristics which allow sick cells to resist current treatments. Their identification could then allow explaining why these cells succeed in repelling treatments.
  • The micro-environment: it deals with the immediate environment of sick cells and could play a part in the inefficiency of treatments, especially through the immune system.

The objectives of these two trails are to understand the resistance mechanisms of blood cancer and to suggest new therapeutic solutions.

Interdisciplinary research

Research on cancer traditionally belongs to the fields of medicine and biology. The innovative approach of the Labex Toucan lies on an interdisciplinary work with the doctoral school « Mathematics, information technologies, computer sciences » of the University of Grenoble. The contribution of mathematicians will allow optimizing experiments thanks to the production of mathematical models. They will allow the development of simulations so results from different experiments can be ranked.

 A continuous assessed scientific work

The whole research led by the labex Toucan will be assessed. This will be supervised by a college composed of international experts who belong to the Cancer Research & Therapeutic Innovation Foundation. This college will evaluate and validate the scientific orientations taken by each research team. It will also ensure the objectives which led to the creation of the Labex Toucan in relation with The French National Research Agency are respected.
